At Beyond The Box Artistry I create one-of-a-kind works of art, made with a variety of items including recycled objects. I offer greeting cards, as well as assemblage, and collage art.

Pat Byther Maine Artist

Bio:
After living most of my life being told I had no artistic talent, imagine the surprise in the blessing of becoming an artist. In 1999, I recognized my talents and abilities. My ability to create has grown ever since. Many people who appreciate my work call me a "green artist" because many of the found objects that show up in my art are recycled.

I have shared my talents by being a volunteer art teacher at Temple Academy in Waterville. I also teach classes at local stamping stores. Whenever I can, I am very willing to teach others. One of my hopes is that I can educate people about the many styles and forms of art. I also readily agree that beauty is bountiful and is all around us, if we only take the time to look. My goal in life is stated in this message, "If in my lifetime, I am able to live a Godly life and share beauty, love, and happiness, then I will have achieved my goal in life. Only then will I have been successful."

I was born 1954 in Hanover, Maryland and lived in Maryland until my move to Maine. I have been living in Winslow, Maine since 1994. I live there with my husband and my cats and dog. I have one daughter, Michelle, who is living on her own in Washington, DC.

Some commonly unknown art words:

Assemblage is a close relative to collage. It is a three dimensional piece of art that is made by putting found objects together so that they blend and/or accent each other to form one piece of art. The artist uses whatever catches his/her eye to compose the art.

Collage means to glue. It is a piece of art made by gluing bits and pieces of a variety of materials to a single surface to create a whole. Items used can be pictures, fragments of paper items, and ephemera.

Melange is a combination of mismatched items.

Montage is a form of art that blends an assortment of ephemera to create one whole piece of art.

Ephemera is written and printed matter that is meant to be short lived and not intended to be retained or protected. These items were designed to be useful or important but only for a short time. Some examples of ephemera are cards, tickets, ads, manuscripts and stock certificates.

Found object is a term used for an item that is made for a purpose other than art. Artists
have an eye to see the potential of these objects to be used in creating works of art.

Mixed media is a term used when creating art using more than one art medium. If you use any combination of mediums, such as paint, assemblage, ink, clay, and metal; you would have created a mixed media work of art.
